Reminiscent of the best of Annie Dillard, Mary Karr and Sebastian Junger, Leslie Leyland Fields' Alaskan memoir is an inspiring narrative of life in the wild. SURVIVING THE ISLAND OF GRACE is a beautiful and haunting memoir of a woman who left the East Coast and moved to Alaska looking for a new life. In brilliant prose, Fields tells her story of adapting to life on a wilderness island without running water, telephones, or other 20th century conveniences. Here, as a 20-year-old newlywed, she is immersed into the world of commercial salmon fishing. With an unflinching gaze, she explores the extremes that define her new life the beauty and brutality of commercial fishing, the startling land and seascape around her, the isolation, the physical labor, the intensity of communal island life. Among these extremes, she must find her way from a young woman to wife, commercial fisherwoman, and mother. She explores as well, perhaps most eloquently of all, her unique New Hampshire childhood and its role in preparing her for her life in the bush. With its dramatic Alaskan setting and moving narrative, SURVIVING THE ISLAND OF GRACE is a poetic and powerful book.

A fascinating look at a life that very few of us could or would want to live. I can only assume that there is going to be a sequel because when this book ends there are only two children. While reading about the author I learned that she had six children. I can't help but think that her life would have been much easier if she hadn't worked in the boat with her husband. Her husband does not seem as though he is a very patient or understanding man. I also wonder what the other women on the island thought when Leslie started working on the boat instead of staying on the island with them to help with the chores there? I guess they eventually got used to it, but what did they think when she first arrived?

Lovely writing, but it should be. But, I found the jumping around in time and place very disorienting.

I read this book on my Kindle and have to say that the editing is the worst I have ever seen in a book. There are typos on every page. The worst typos are all the hyphenated words that might have made sense in the hard copy books, but don't make sense on the Kindle. Sometimes, totally wrong words were typed. I could usually figure out the correct word, but don't really enjoy playing word guessing games while I'm reading.

Pictures would have helped a lot. I have no idea what the skiffs look like. Maybe the real books have pictures. My Kindle book didn't.

Still, incredibly interesting and I hope she writes more books about her life on the island or on the Kenai peninsula.

Surviving the Island of Grace Life on the Wild Edge of America eBook Leslie Leyland Fields Reviews

I've been following Leslie's blog for some time now and I think I've known her forever! I love adventure and understand the ups and downs of being at home with children. It was a great read.
A well written but very poorly edited book. One had to place his own words to fill misspelled words or hyphenated sentences. The story was well worth the effort however so give it a try.
There was so much more to this story then what lay on its surface. So much to hear an see from God's workings an providence. A wonderful story of her life an lives of those she encountered. I enjoyed it!
An absolutely incredible, rich, stunning, riveting, in depth &beautiful book!!!! I couldn't put it down!! I was enthralled &stunned all at the same time!!! How does this wilderness&academic couple fit sO much into theirs lives!!!!! A real must read!!!!!
If you haven't read Leslie Leyland Fields yet, then you're missing out on some wonderful stories, beautifully told

life in Alaska as a commercial salmon-fishing family, the trip from one island to another surrounded by a pod of fin whales, the Baptist church pew on the boat dock, and the problems at the intersection of Kodiak bears and garbage containers.

Leslie allows us a glimpse into a life and a landscape that few of us will every experience. Whether we are surrounded by suburbia, corn fields, or Alaskan mountains, we share the same faith in God--in his love and his workings in our wild hearts.

I recommend it.
Surviving the Island of Grace tells the story of Leslie Layland Field's struggle as a new bride unfamiliar with the life she has married into and how she fought to make that life her own. It's a life most people can't begin to imagine--isolated a good part of the year at a remote fishing camp under fairly primitive conditions, with no guarantees of a prosperous outcome.

Her writing brings alive the hardships and rewards of this difficult life. It's a story of a journey--from her difficult childhood, her adventures in college, travels around the world, building a home on an isolated Alaskan island bereft of what most people consider the necessities of life, and finally embracing this life of her choosing.

It's also a book about Alaska and it's harsh, unforgiving, and spectacular landscape, told from the perspective of a person living in this environment for the first time.

The book covers the first fifteen years of this harsh, not always rewarding, life in an honest, forthright manner. Her writing draws you into her story--bringing to life her trials and triumphs.
I so enjoyed reading this book and experiencing Alaska through Leslie's real-life adventures. I recently met her and I can tell you she is the real deal - it makes the book even more enjoyable knowing that everything in it is true to life and to who she is. Enjoy delving into a real pioneering woman, willing to take risks, work hard, love well and live life fully! Take this on vacation and enjoy the journey! I am looking forward to reading it a second time!
